Former US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has recorded a video congratulating Taiwan ahead of National Day. Taiwan will observe National Day this year on Saturday.
The video was part of a National Day celebration organized by Taiwan’s representative office in Atlanta, held virtually due to COVID-19.
In the video, Haley said that the United States will continue to be a partner to Taiwan, and that a secure Taiwan means a secure region and a secure world.
A range of current and former officials from states throughout the southeastern US also offered their congratulations during the event. A number of them praised the state of Taiwan-US relations and discussing future bilateral cooperation.
Head of Taiwan’s Atlanta office Elliot Yi-lung Wang said that this year’s National Day celebrations are taking place during a high point for Taiwan-US ties. He cited both long-established and more recent pro-Taiwan legislation passed by the US Congress, as well as increased US arms sales to Taiwan. He also said that Taiwan’s decision to ease import restrictions on US pork shows preparation and determination for a bilateral trade agreement.
