Legislature President You Si-kun says that through mutual support and a cycle of goodwill, Taiwan has become an indispensable member of the international community. That came during a speech at the National Day celebrations in Taipei Sunday.
You said that building upon the contributions of important figures from Taiwan’s recent history, its people are able to make democracy a part of Taiwan’s DNA.
You said places like Hong Kong, Myanmar, and Afghanistan have seen democratic spaces diminish. He said that countries participating in China’s One Belt One Road initiative are especially vulnerable to totalitarian influence. At the same time, he says that Taiwan has been able to increase its international visibility and draw attention with its pandemic prevention measures and economic performance. He said that last year’s mask donations to countries around the world and this year’s offerings of vaccines to Taiwan show broadening alliances and deepening friendships between Taiwan and the international community.
You also said that Taiwan has the ability and the determination to protect itself, and mutual support from countries in the “democratic alliance” is helping shape Taiwan’s defensive “hedgehog doctrine.”
You said he is grateful to medical workers, police, and firefighters, who have made it possible to hold this year’s National Day festivities. He said Taiwan is beating back the pandemic thanks to the efforts of its people, as well as the efforts of the central and local governments.
